Air Jordan 4 “Bred” Makes A Comeback For The Ages

It’s hard to fathom that 30 years has already passed since the introduction of the Air Jordan 4 but it’s this precise longevity in the game that makes it as iconic as it is.

Making its first appearance in February 1989, Michael Jordan debuted the pair during the NBA All-Star Game in Houston that month.

It wasn’t long until the silhouette made waves when Jordan scored an incredible 44 points during the NBA Playoffs that year against the Cavaliers.

The “Bred” took centre stage when Jordan made the buzzer-beating winning shot, beating the Cavs at literally the very last second in Game 5.

That moment would go down in history as “The Shot” and with it, the Air Jordan 4 “Bred” was cemented in sporting history.

A lesser known fun fact is that while the pair is more commonly referred to as “Bred” due to its black and red tones, it’s actually formally known as “Black Cement” for its Black uppers and Cement Grey front midsoles.

Legendary designer Tinker Hatfield had a momentous task at hand when he crafted the silhouette – how to top one of the greatest sneaker designs in the Air Jordan 3.

Hatfield chose to stay true to the brand, not changing what wasn’t broken, and adding elements that elevated the look such as the mesh netting on its sides and the iconic “wings” on the laces.

The result was astounding and not only did it top the Air Jordan 3, most sneakerheads would have it on its Top 3 of all time today.

As with most iconic Jordan sneakers, the Air Jordan 4 “Bred” had a retro re-release in 1999, following Jordan’s second retirement from basketball.

Its upcoming re-release on May 4, 2019, will be its first since 2012 and will be the closest the shoes will ever look in comparison to the original. They’ll even arrive in their original box, the first time ever since 1989.

The Air Jordan 4 “Bred” will arrive in Singapore and Malaysia on Saturday (May 4) at 9am via Nike.com in sizes for adults, kids, younger kids and baby/toddlers.

Pomelo Fashion To Open First Physical Store in S’pore at 313 Somerset

Popular online fashion retailer Pomelo is set to open its first physical store in Singapore in June 2019.

Pomelo’s decision to open an offline store in Singapore was first announced last year but its location wasn’t disclosed.

Hoarding began appearing at Basement 1 of 313 Somerset beside the escalator, indicating Pomelo’s upcoming location and opening date.

The move marks an on-going expansion by the online fashion brand to provide an omnichannel presence for its customers. In fact, Singapore will be the first physical store outside of Thailand for the Bangkok-based company.

The use of the retail space is expected to similar to that of its Thailand stores, which is dedicated for online customers to try on and pick up their purchases.

In that way, customers can pick out their favourites online, try on the pieces and only pay for the ones they leave with.

“Discovery for fashion is going online, where you’re not constrained by having to display the entire catalogue,” Pomelo founder David Jou said last year.

“But e-commerce for fashion is plagued by the problem of returns because the clothes don’t fit or they don’t look good. Having the online-to-offline model cuts down returns because the consumer only buys what they have tried on,” he added.

In light of its upcoming launch, Pomelo Fashion has also begun listing job openings on Jobstreet for the store such as Fashion Sales Advisor and Operations Associate.

The New Lace-less Nike Free RN 3.0 Is Your New Favourite Minimal Running Shoe

Since its introduction in 2004, the Nike Free line has been the closest thing a runner has to running barefoot and the 2019 edition of the Free 3.0 sees a return to its roots.

The new 3.0 is 1mm lower to the ground than its 2018 predecessor, giving runners a greater connection to the Earth beneath us. In addition, a huge plus in this year’s iteration is its last, which is shaped to the anatomy of a foot, giving runners a more naturally-shaped silhouette to run in.

Upon wearing it, the most apparent element was its second-skin feel, staying tight to the foot and reducing any foot sliding within the shoe. The uppers, made from lace-less Nike Flyknit, stretches appropriate with every step you take.

As expected, the midsoles are firm – as intended for lower-mileage runs – while the outsoles are flexible to the bend thanks to the mapping of sipes of various depths. These sipes are also found along the top of the midoles to help increase dorsi and plantar flex movement.

Sipes of various depths to aid with the natural bend of one’s feet

In practice, as a user of typical running shoes, the Free 3.0s provided a new sense of flexibility for the foot, allowing for a more natural stride. After my first run in them, I am very likely to include it in my routines for shorter runs (2-3km) and light outdoor workouts.

I personally never realised how restrictive traditional soles were until I tried on the Free 3.0 and took it for a run. The change was pretty significant and the usual soreness I used to feel in the arch of my foot didn’t show up.

Flexibility of the outsoles

As someone who is also really prone to blisters due to my feet shifting in position within a shoe, the Free 3.0 alleviated any opportunity for that due to its structure. While most traditional shoes take on a more tapered-front construction, the 2019 Free 3.0 tapers towards the heel, akin to the shape on an actual foot.

Another surprising quality of the shoe was the grippiness of its soles. My run was on rather wet ground and the shoes had no signs of slipping, with every step as firm as the next.

My initial skepticism regarding the lace-less design was also quickly evaporated as the secondary lock-down overlay across the upper kept my feet snug and comfortable.

At first glance, the shoe may also take some aback by its unique look, but it is simply a testament to Nike’s stand on creating a shoe perfect for a barefoot running experience.

If you prefer a less snug fit when it comes to running footwear or prefer to wear thicker socks, a half to full size up should be worth considering. If you’re unsure about your size, fret not as Nike.com lets you return your kicks for any reason, even after you’ve taken them on a trial run, within 30 days of delivery.

The Nike Free RN 3.0 is already available alongside the newly-released Free RN 5.0 on Nike.com for both Men and Women.

Air Max Day: What Is It and Why Does It Matter?

air max day

If you’re new to the sneaker game or never really ventured beyond casual sneaker collecting, March 26 might seem like any other day to you. However, for hardcore sneakerheads, Air Max Day is one that is held very dear and very close to their hearts.

Before the hype and heat of recent years such as Virgil Abloh’s “The Ten” collection and Jerry Lorenzo’s Fear Of God collaborations, the Air Max was – and still is to many – the Godfather of sneakers.

Released in 1987, the first pair made its debut in the form of the Air Max 1, designed by beloved designer Tinker Hatfield.

While the Air technology had been present in Nike’s arsenal since the 70s, its application was mostly kept to running. But as the times changed, so did the tastes and expectations of people and Hatfield recognised that shift.

“The mid-’80s was a period of transition from a more formalized hierarchy to a looser, street-based, more inspirational form,” Hatfield explained. “We at Nike were part of that wave, and I just happened to be a designer doing it from a footwear perspective when nobody else was.”

Hatfield revolutionised the way we thought about sneakers by introducing what we now know as “visible Air”, a pocket of translucent cushion that has become synonymous with the Air Max line.

By the 90s, sport and culture had converged and street culture was in full force. With each bold iteration of an Air Max silhouette, people had more ways to express themselves, along with the music they were listening to.

As youths were exposed to hip hop, faster dance music and the advent of the World Wide Web, iconic silhouettes were born such as the Air Max 90, Air Max 95, Air Max 97, Air Max Plus and more.

Despite newer competing silhouettes entering the market, these classic models are still as popular as they ever were and have become muses for big name collaborators like Abloh and Lorenzo.

Today, we’re introduced to a whole range of newer models that continue to break tradition while paying homage to its heritage. Silhouettes like the Air Max 720 clearly have a touch of nostalgia in its aesthetics while incorporating modern technologies, evident in having the tallest Air bag in history.

The recently-released Nike Air Max 720 “Sea Forest”

So the next time the calendar hits March 26, spare a thought for the amazing journey Air Maxes have had over the years and if you own a pair, what a better day to wear them loud and proud.

If you’re looking to own one or simply expand your collection, here are some top picks that are available on Nike.com.

Apex Legends Clocks In 50 Million Players in 28 Days, Outpacing Fortnite’s Growth Rate

It is truly an understatement to say that EA has a hit in its hands with Apex Legends. After the startling announcement that it topped 25 million players in its first week, developers Respawn Entertainment has announced that 50 million players have laid their hands on the game after just 28 days from launch.

Apex has had a meteoric rise to stardom since its surprise release in February when it was made available for free on the same day it was announced. Since then, the game has been lauded by critics and players alike.

In comparison, Fortnite took more than four months to hit 50 million players, although it does boast a total player count of over 200 million. However, with Apex Legends outpacing Fortnite in terms of growth rate, it could very well be a matter of time before the former reaches that number as well.

The achievement is even more noteworthy taking into consideration that Apex is only available on three platforms: the PS4, Xbox One and PC. Fortnite, on the other hand, is playable on mobile and Nintendo Switch as well.

Time will tell how this freshly-brewing rivalry will play out.

Earlier last week, users have begun noticing several changes on Fortnite that have borrowed elements from Apex such as the ping system.

Respawn are also taking a page of Fortnite’s handbook by adding a battle pass in March as a form of monetization and a way to introduce new content.
