The upper mesh of the adidas Futurecraft Biofabric, constructed from fibres made by German manufacturers AMSilk to replicate natural silk, are 100% biodegradable and 15% lighter than conventional silk fibres.

The material is also bio-sourced and unlike other materials used in shoe production such as leather, the kicks are purely vegan.

To decompose the material, the shoe has to be exposed to a high concentration of the digestion enzyme proteinase, a natural substance. When exposed, the shoe can decompose within 36 hours.
