adidas Takes Over Jordan To Be #2 Sneaker Brand in the US

adidas is now officially more popular than Jordan Brand as the Three Stripes overtook Jumpman in market share in the United States.

According to market research company NPD Group, adidas doubled up on its market share in the US from last year by occupying 13%.

adidas remains behind Jordan’s parent company Nike, which owns 44% of market share, although it should be noted that this market share occupied by Nike includes subsidiaries Jordan Brand and Converse.

“This is an achievement I never thought I would see in my lifetime,” tweeted NPD’s Matt Powell earlier this morning.

Although some may be skeptical about the attention surrounding the news that adidas has overtaken merely a subsidiary of Nike and not the Swoosh themselves, not many would have dared imagine that adidas could have overtaken the legendary Air Jordans in sales five years ago.

While most reports agree on the relative decline of Nike’s market share, many are unable to pin point to the factor behind adidas’ success.

Powell attributes adidas rise in sales due to the popularity of classic silhouettes such as the Stan Smith and the Superstar, the best selling sneaker of 2016. However, most sneakerheads would easily point to the “halo effect” of Kanye West and his YEEZY line propelling adidas to its hype status.

Regardless, the increased competition between the Three Stripes and Swoosh can only be good for consumers as both companies invest to innovate with adidas looking towards 4D printing and Nike developing new ways to manufacture sneaker leather with its Flyleather tech.

adidas’ New NMD Model Raises Eyebrows

adidas is planning to release a brand new version of its popular NMD model and the first images of the pair have begun to surface online.

With the bumper at the back of the outsole and a suede heel added, this design have since received mixed reactions to NMD enthusiast. The bumpers on the side has a rather eccentric look and the colour scheme is perplexing compared to previous models.

Called the adidas NMD Racer Primeknit, the model is set to hit the market in mid 2018.

This Is Probably What An Off-White™ x adidas Collaboration Would Look Like

In the world of sneakers, a collaboration either happens officially or it gets dreamt up by imagination of designers, artists and customisers.

While the Off-White™ x Nike collection is getting all the hype right now, graphic designer and artist CORBS (@blkoutln) has taken it upon himself to show the world what an Off-White™ x adidas collaboration could like like.

Imagining Virgil Abloh x Adidas • ‘Triple Off-White’ Ultra Boost • @virgilabloh @adidas @off____white • Corbs.ca •

A post shared by CORBS (@blkoutln) on

Taking the UltraBOOST silhouette as his muse, the hyper-realistic depiction looks extremely plausible and contains all the elements seen in the Nike collab, including a “SHOELACES” label, a red cable tie and an “off-white” coloured upper.

It’s unlikely that any eventual collaboration between the two brands would resemble this, but we’re pretty confident that the pair could become a reality if put in the right customisers hands.

In paying homage to this design, Redditor guppppppppy also submitted a design of an EQT reimagined by Off-White™ and Virgil Abloh.

The result of the team up is a Shinobi ninja-inspired NMD CS1, coming in an all-black colourway.

The leather insoles are co-branded, while the heel tab takes on the phrase “The Art of Seeing Through Darkness” and “The Good Will Out” in English and Japanese.

The pair is expected to drop via The Good Will Out’s channels on September 16.

While this hasn’t been officially announced or confirmed by adidas, @YeezyMafia has had an impeccable track record of leaking drop dates and releases in general.

The pair has been dubbed the “Beluga 2.0” for its similarities – and notable differences – with an early pair called the “Beluga”.

The main exception on the updated pair is the absence of a bright orange streak on the lateral side of the shoe. The heel tab on the new version is also expected to be different from its predecessor.

Expect more news from adidas to come by in the coming weeks, so as always, stay tuned for more updates.
