The Nike x Stranger Things Collection Will Be Released in Singapore This Month

Easily one of the biggest hits produced under the Netflix Originals umbrella, Stranger Things is teaming up with Nike on a range of footwear and apparel, inspired by the 80s – incidentally the setting of the show and arguably Nike’s most formative decade.

While the show’s third season sees its protagonists tackle high school, love and impending danger in the summer of 1985, it was also the same year that the visible Air was taking shape, two years prior to the debut of the Air Max 1 in 1987.

The collection will include the nostalgic silhouettes from Nike’s repertoire of greatest hits such as the Cortez, Blazer and Tailwind.

The collaborative capsule will also include apparel such as t-shirts, caps and hoodies.

The collection will arrive in Singapore via Dover Street Market and Nike.com in two drops.

The first will take place on July 27 featuring footwear and apparel in the Hawkins High’s green and orange colour scheme.

Following that, a second drop on July 1, dubbed the “OG Pack”, will come in classic red, white and blue colours, celebrating the 1985 Independence Day.

Season 3 of Stranger Things will arrive on Netflix on July 4.

Barack and Michelle Obama Sign Deal With Netflix To Produce Shows

Former US President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama have announced a multiyear production deal with Netflix to produce television shows and films for the streaming service.

The New York Times reported that the deal will allow the Obamas to reach millions of people in the US and overseas under their new production company, Higher Ground Productions.

While many supporters were urging the Obamas to take a more active approach against conservatives and Donald Trump, the couple will not be using the platform for such purposes.

Instead, a statement from Netflix stated that the productions will feature “scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features” that highlight issues and themes the president pursued during his eight years in office.

“One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” the former President said in a statement.

“That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix — we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.”

Apple was also rumoured to have been interested to be working with the Obamas as the iPhone makers gain traction on building their own streaming platform before Netflix secured the deal.

Netflix Renews Black Mirror For A Fifth Season

The highly-addictive, mind-numbingly brilliant series Black Mirror will be making its return for season 5, after Netflix announced its renewal earlier today.

The official Black Mirror Twitter page posted a teaser video showcasing brief snippets from past episodes such as “Fifteen Million Merits” and the two-time Emmy Award-winning “San Junipero”.

The video ends with “Be Right Back”, a play on words with the common slang ‘BRB’, indicating the return of the show, along with a dig at the growing impatience of the millennial generation in wanting new things – that’s us!

No official word yet on when the release date will be for Season 5. However, given that the third and fourth seasons were released in 2016 and 2017 respectively, it may point to a 2018 release for its fifth.

Either way, Black Mirror episodes have enormous ‘re-watchability’, and if you’re still lagging behind in the show, seasons 1-4 are streaming on

This Film About How Wonder Woman Was Created Isn’t What You’d Expect, In A Very Good Way

The world gushed about Wonder Woman’s debut feature film last year and her icon status has inspired both women and men for generations, yet not much has been said about her creator, Dr William Moulton Marston – not in recent years, at least.

Professor Marston and The Wonder Women, the untold story of how Wonder Woman was created, is an unexpected yet pleasantly surprising one that celebrates free love and explores the elusive question of whether humans are able to love two people at the same time.

The true story of Harvard professor and psychologist Marston is ‘incredible’ in every sense of the word, both unbelievable and extraordinary, particularly when we consider the Wonder Woman character that we’ve come to love.

Early works of the Wonder Woman character were criticised by many for having perversive themes, containing overly sexual ideas such as bondage and homosexuality within comic books catered for children. Yet, as we explore Marston’s life story, it explains how his personal life, advocacy for feminism and his relationship with two women informed his storytelling.

While I’ll refrain from entering spoiler territory, it’s worth noting how remarkable Marston’s work as a psychologist in studying and understanding human behaviour led to the creation of the Wonder Woman character, as a vehicle to transmit his findings and messages across to a generation that had yet to see gender equality as a basic necessity.

It goes without saying that the film is worth every trip to the cinema for its strong performances from its leads in Luke Evans, Rebecca Hall and Bella Heathcote. As it stands, it currently has a Rotten Tomato score of 87%.

The film does have an R21 rating for mature themes and sexual scenes, so if you’re under 21, you might need to wait before you can watch it.

The film will be exclusively shown at GV and is now showing in Singapore.

Critics Are Calling ‘Black Panther’ Marvel’s Best Film To Date, Out in Singapore on Feb 13

Marvel Studios’ upcoming blockbuster has maintained the company’s long-standing run of producing ‘Fresh’ films based on the Rotten Tomatoes ‘Tomatometer’.

Each of the studios’ 18 films in the past 10 years has gotten a ‘Fresh’ rating, with 16 of them achieving the coveted ‘Certified Fresh’ certification.

A 98% rating is a huge achievement for any motion picture and rightly so for this one, which many critics have calling it the best entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

[caption id="attachment_11645" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Screen shot of Rotten Tomatoes as of February 9[/caption]

At the forefront of its success is the film’s cultural and historical significance in showcasing a cast almost entirely made up of actors of African descent, and the portrayal of strong women warriors.

Its villain, portrayed by the talented Michale B. Jordan (Creed), has also earned praise amongst reviewers, solving Marvel Studios’ recurring issue of shallow villains with the exception of Loki.

The movie releases in Singapore on February 13, with advance ticket sales already available at Golden Village and Shaw.

Sony Releases ‘Venom’ Poster and Teases Potential Trailer Tomorrow

While Spider-Man is happily fighting crime alongside The Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony Pictures is set to release a Venom movie later this year in a separate universe.

Sony, which still owns the rights to producing movies surrounding the wall-crawler and his supporting characters, famously agreed to share Spidey on the big screen with Marvel Studios, resulting in the successful Spider-Man: Homecoming film last year.

Venom, which stars British heartthrob Tom Hardy as the titular character, recently wrapped up production and it looks like fans will finally get a first glimpse at the film very soon.

The official Instagram page for the movie released a poster with the caption “Tomorrow”, suggesting that a trailer may very well drop in the coming hours.

Venom releases in theatres on October 5.

‘Deadpool 2’ Trailer Brings The Funny While Throwing Shade At DC’s Justice League

Ryan Reynolds is back as the lovable “Merc with a Mouth” and the full trailer for his upcoming film does not disappoint.

Breaking the fourth wall, Deadpool takes a dig at Justice League when it is revealed that the visual effects for Cable’s metal arm had not been completed, revealing a green sleeve instead.

“Why aren’t the visual effects not done? It’s a metal arm, it’s not like we’re trying to remove a moustache,” Reynolds says in character, referencing to the poor CGI attempt at removing Henry Caville’s facial hair in the latest Justice League movie.

The trailer’s main purpose was to introduce Cable and does so in style, showcasing the serious side to the character, making him the perfect contrast to the care-free Deadpool.

The movie releases in May, alongside Avengers: Infinity War and Solo: A Star Wars Story, making it quite a jammed pack month for comic book and sci-fi nerds like us.
