What Happens To Your Hair When You Exercise

Working out on a regular basis comes with a ton of benefits for the body. Regular physical activity helps combat stress, ailments, bad moods and even provides an energy boost to start the day afresh.

However, not watching the way we exercise could also come with negative or adverse effects on various parts of our body.

Our hair, for instance, has a love-hate relationship when it comes to the power of exercise.

While on one hand, exercise can provide many benefits to your scalp by reducing stress and unclogging hair follicles, there are other ways in which working out could cause a thinning top.

Excessive exercise

A common way in which physical activity could negatively affect our hair is excessive exercising, defined as working out beyond an hour a day. While moderate exercises can help in reducing tension, overly straining your body can actually put your body in a state of chronic stress.

According to the American Hair Loss Association, chronic stress is a top cause of telogen effluvium (TE), a condition when hair follicles prematurely enter a state of rest, causing hair to shed instead of growing.

So while exercising beyond your body’s capacity might help you shed a pound or two, it will also cause your hair to fall out.

Eat right

Besides excessive exercising, another top cause of TE is poor nutrition. While it may be tempting to cut down on the calories in pursuit of weight loss, deficiency in certain nutrients can cause your hair to thin out.

A protein-rich diet with dairy, meat and fish is important to ensure healthy hair growth in the body.

With that said, many who choose to exercise with the addition of protein supplements in powdered form and shakes are also at risk as this too can be detrimental to your hair.

According to Hair Transplant Surgeon Dr Thomy Kouremada-Zioga, powdered protein shakes can increase testosterone and DHT, the latter of which has been linked to hair loss.

Protein shakes tend to contain growth hormones that increase testosterone levels in the blood, which in turn produces a chemical called DHT. While DHT is important for the growth of facial hair and other parts of the body, it actually inhibits hair growth on the scalp and can accelerate the effect of male pattern balding.

Then there’s the sweat build up

As if there weren’t enough against us already, a build-up of sweat on the scalp will also result in the thinning of your hair.

When sweat builds up salt on your scalp, this may cause hair to shed and even break. Wearing old sweaty caps will also have this effect on your hair.

What’s more, industry expert Dr Harris-Wells has even suggested that the lactic acid present in sweat can further break down hair follicles and make your hair brittle, weak and dry.

Not all hope is lost

Thankfully, there are ways to curb the issue at its roots. Keep your workouts to under an hour, unless you’re an athlete with specific training schedules and regimes.

Try to keep protein shakes to a minimum, and if you’re hoping to shed some pounds, ensure that you maintain a healthy diet and eat right. Lastly, it’s always a good idea to take a shower after working out and wash your hair regularly to keep the scalp clean.
