For fans who have been eagerly waiting for new music from Sam Smith, the time has finally arrived.

After several posts of promotional billboards on the singer’s social media, as well as a note teasing a forthcoming record, his new single Too Good At Goodbyes was released yesterday (8 Sept).

Opening with just a piano accompaniment, Too Good At Goodbyes is a powerful and touching song. With its poignant lyrics, fans will remember exactly what it was that made them fall in love with the singer when he first saw international recognition.

With a gospel-like chorus, it’s not just the singer’s voice that makes it such a great comeback track. He managed to produce a highly relatable break-up song, “And every time you leave me, the quicker these tears dry/And every time you walk out, the less I love you/Baby, we don’t stand a chance, it’s sad but it’s true”, without coming off as clichéd or overused.

This is Sam Smith’s newest music since his 2014 debut album, In the Lonely Hour, and 2015 James Bond theme, Writings on the Wall.

His second studio album, TPH-50HR, is due to be released sometime in September. From this newest single, we can probably expect more of the singer’s melancholy voice matched perfectly to soothing melodies and heart-rending lyrics.

TPH-50HR refers to ‘The Pink House-50 Heydon Road’ and pays homage to Sam Smith’s childhood home and family.

It’s been rumoured that album collaborators include Jimmy Napes, Naughty Boy and Adam Lambert.
