Sony has just announced that a Venom movie is on the way, with an October 5, 2018 release date.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, there is already a working script written by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. While a director has yet to be attached to the film, The Mummy’s Alex Kurtzman has been rumoured to be a possible frontrunner.

It is currently unclear how involved Marvel Studios will be in this one, if at all, as the announcement was made solely by Sony alone.

Sony, who holds the rights to Spider-Man and affiliated characters, agreed back in 2015 to work together with Marvel on upcoming Spider-Man movies, following the less than successful Amazing Spider-Man 2. In fact, many believe that Marvel led the creative direction of Spidey’s new standalone reboot Homecoming, due for release this year.

While Venom has long been known as Spider-Man’s foe, the character has had standalone comic issues, quelling any doubts as to whether the character can hold a standalone film.

Audiences have had a taste of Venom on the big screen in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, with Topher Grace donning the symbiotic suit.

More information to come when it’s made available.
