In time for International Women’s Day on Wednesday (Mar 8), Nike has launched an activewear hijab for Muslim women athletes.

It’s a testament to the inclusiveness that Nike has boldly upheld, after launching a plus-size sportswear range for women earlier this month.

According to Nike, the Pro Hijab has been over a year in the making, aligned with an ongoing cultural shift of more women embracing sport. A particular reference point was hijabi runner Sarah Attar, who rose to the international scene in 2012 and Olympic weightlifting athlete Amna Al Haddad.

In speaking to Al Arabiya, Nike spokesperson Megan Saalfeld said that “the Nike Pro Hijab was designed as a direct result of our athletes telling us they needed this product to perform better, and we hope that it will help athletes around the world do just that.”

The Nike Pro Hijab is set to be released in early 2018.
