The awards season is well underway and with the Golden Globes wrapping up this morning, we finally have a glimpse of what to expect this February when the Academy Awards – more commonly known as the Oscars – are in session.

Critically-acclaimed musical La La Land stole the show, breaking records by winning seven awards including Best Actor and Actress for a Musical or Comedy for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. The film also won Best Director and Best Motion Picture for a Musical or Comedy.

Moonlight, which many expected to win big, was snubbed for most categories but managed to snag the top prize of Best Motion Picture for a Drama.

Manchester By The Sea, Nocturnal Animals and Fences won awards for acting while Disney’s hit movie Zootopia won the award for Best Animated Film.

For television, Netflix’s The Crown won two awards for Best Drama Series and Best Actress, keeping up the streaming network’s award-winning streak.

Rapper, comedian, actor and director Donald Glover – also known as Childish Gambino – also made his mark in Hollywood with two wins for his FX drama Atlanta, which he writes and stars in. He won Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical while the show won Best Comedy Series.

The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story also snagged two prizes, one for Best Miniseries and Best Actress for Sarah Paulson. She also won an Emmy for a role in the show.

While the films and television shows were the highlights, a standout moment of the event was Meryl Streep’s acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award. She took the opportunity on the podium to give a passionate speech heavily criticising incoming President Trump – short of mentioning him by name.
