After cutting the cord from social media in December 2015, Ed Sheeran broke his silence on Facebook and Twitter over the New Year’s announcing that new music will be released on January 6, 5am (ET) – that’s 1pm in Singapore and Malaysia.
In a short clip, the two-time Grammy winner can be seen holding up a handwritten sign saying “New music coming Friday!!”
In a separate clip, fans have started speculating on the possible title for the eagerly-awaited album from the singer-songwriter.
Sheeran’s previous two albums were called “+” (Plus) and “x” (Multiply), and judging from this teaser clip below, it appears that the upcoming album would follow the math-inspired theme: “÷” (Divide).
Sheeran has previously spoken about possible title names to Entertainment Weekly, saying that Divide or Subtract were possibilities to keep the theme running.
During the interview, the 25-year-old explained, “Every title has its own theme. x was called ‘multiply’ because it made everything that was on + bigger. From the venues to the songs to the radio plays to the sales.”
While the possible meaning behind ÷ (Divide) remains unclear, we expect his new music to divide and conquer the airwaves as he has previously done with numerous hits such as The A-Team, Lego House, I See Fire, Thinking Out Loud and Photograph.
As for his fourth album, we reckon “Subtract” make a perfect title for a stripped/acoustic album – just thinking out loud here.
