Fans of Justin Bieber may be well aware that his hit song ‘Love Yourself’ was written by Ed Sheeran, but many might not have known that the song wasn’t originally written for the Biebs.
In an interview with Carson Daly, Sheeran revealed that the song was actually meant for himself but it didn’t make the cut.
“That was a song I had written for Divide. It just wouldn’t have made it,” Sheeran explained. “And then Justin took it and did his thing on it, and released it as a single and made it what it is.”
“So going from a song that would have never been released to the biggest song of last year – it just became Billboard‘s #1 of 2016 of the whole year, and nominated for Song of the Year at the GRAMMYs – it just shows you that you shouldn’t always write stuff off.”
That’s right, if Bieber didn’t take it, the song would probably have never seen the light of day.
A similar incident happened regarding another of Sheeran’s songs, which goes to show how talented the singer-songwriter is. One Direction’s ‘Little Things’ was a song written by Sheeran and Fiona Bevan which was forgotten about until the British group heard it during a session and asked if they could use it.
Social media followers of Bieber and Sheeran would be aware that the pair have developed a close working relationship in recent times, with the latter contributing to other tracks besides ‘Love Yourself’. According to Billboard, the Major Lazer/MØ collaboration ‘Cold Water’ featuring Bieber was originally penned by Sheeran.
“It was a song I must’ve half-written somewhere at a time where I was writing a lot of songs and I did it at Benny Blanco’s house and then I got an email from Diplo just being like, ‘Yo! That ‘Cold Water’ song is dope! Can I have it?’ And I was like, ‘I have no idea what you’re talking about,’ so I just didn’t reply,” Sheeran said.
“And then he emailed and was like, “Yo, Justin [Bieber] wants to hop on the ‘Cold Water’ song. Is that cool?’ And I’m just like, ‘What are you talking about?’… And then the song came out and it was number one and I was like ‘Oh, that song!’ I remember doing it, but it was really, really slow. I remember hearing it and being like ‘That kind of sounds like me. Oh wait, it was me.'”
This guy can clearly write hit songs in his sleep.
Sheeran released two tracks from his upcoming Divide album last Friday, and although no fixed date has been set for the full album release, we bet it’s going to be one hell of an album.
