Almost every 80s and 90s kid who spent considerable time in the arcade would remember the button-mashing spectacle that is Marvel vs. Capcom. If you’ve had fond memories of the game, there’s good news on the horizon.
According to Polygon, Capcom has been working on a fourth installment of the beloved fighting simulator and is expected to unveil the game this week during Sony’s PlayStation Experience event alongside the Capcom Cup Street Fighter 5 tournament.
Unlike its predecessors however, the game is expected to feature characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as opposed to the comics. Fans will get to take on Ken and Ryu with beloved cinematic characters from movies like The Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, and Doctor Strange.
The downside of this is that members of the X-Men franchise will be completely absent from the game. It’s a bittersweet outcome as fan favourites from the preceding installments included the likes of Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm and Magneto.
Thankfully though, with the addition of Spider-man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the friendly-neighbourhood wall-crawler is expected to make an appearance.
Comicbook.com also posted several ‘cryptic’ images which surfaced several days ago celebrating 20 years of the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise, fuelling rumours of the upcoming game.
If the images turn out to be legitimate material from Capcom’s upcoming announcement, fans are also likely to see Marvel’s Netflix heroes including Iron Fist, Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage in the game. The images also feature the number ‘4’ at the bottom left, which could be the logo for Marvel vs. Capcom 4.
It still remains unclear whether these images have been leaked from Capcom or are merely the works of a talented artist. Nevertheless, Polygon sources have seconded the rumours, making this a high possibility.
More updates to come.
