Sony Releases ‘Venom’ Poster and Teases Potential Trailer Tomorrow

While Spider-Man is happily fighting crime alongside The Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony Pictures is set to release a Venom movie later this year in a separate universe.

Sony, which still owns the rights to producing movies surrounding the wall-crawler and his supporting characters, famously agreed to share Spidey on the big screen with Marvel Studios, resulting in the successful Spider-Man: Homecoming film last year.

Venom, which stars British heartthrob Tom Hardy as the titular character, recently wrapped up production and it looks like fans will finally get a first glimpse at the film very soon.

The official Instagram page for the movie released a poster with the caption “Tomorrow”, suggesting that a trailer may very well drop in the coming hours.

Venom releases in theatres on October 5.

Watch The Latest Spider-Man: Homecoming Trailer

Just when you thought DC and Warner Bros. could enjoy its moment in the sun with the well-received Justice League trailer, Sony and Marvel have dropped a brand-new trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The trailer gives us a better look at the suit and how it’s worn – it appears there’s some sort of compression system which tightens by itself.

We also get more dialogue from Michael Keaton’s Vulture, who appears to have a vendetta against Tony Stark.

More importantly, we finally have a glimpse of Iron Man and Spidey working together to save the day, although it doesn’t end well.

Based on the trailer, it’s safe to say that there’s a point when Peter no longer has his Stark-powered suit, and is forced to face the Vulture in his makeshift alternative – which looks more like a hoodie.

Also, did anyone else catch the irony of Tony Stark telling Peter that “if you’re nothing without the suit, you should have it”?

While the trailer does reveal a bit more than many were hoping for – mystery is sometimes a good thing, we’re still super excited for Spider-Man: Homecoming this July.

Watch the trailer above.

Venom Will Be Getting His Own Standalone Movie, Slated For 2018 Release

Sony has just announced that a Venom movie is on the way, with an October 5, 2018 release date.

According to Topher Grace as Eddie Brock/Venom in Spider-Man 3[/caption]

It is currently unclear how involved Marvel Studios will be in this one, if at all, as the announcement was made solely by Sony alone.

Sony, who holds the rights to Spider-Man and affiliated characters, agreed back in 2015 to work together with Marvel on upcoming Spider-Man movies, following the less than successful Amazing Spider-Man 2. In fact, many believe that Marvel led the creative direction of Spidey’s new standalone reboot Homecoming, due for release this year.

While Venom has long been known as Spider-Man’s foe, the character has had standalone comic issues, quelling any doubts as to whether the character can hold a standalone film.

Audiences have had a taste of Venom on the big screen in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, with Topher Grace donning the symbiotic suit.

More information to come when it’s made available.

2016 Wasn’t All Bad, Here Are Some Awesome Things That Happened This Year

2016, like any other year, has been full of ups and downs. While the Internet entertained us with viral videos like Damn, Daniel and the Running Man Challenge, the world of politics gave us some very questionable events like Brexit and Donald Trump. And then there were the countless passings of beloved celebrities that cemented 2016 as a year to forget.

Despite the bleak year, there were some positives. Music was proper quality this year; industry vets like Beyonce and Kanye West released some of their best works with Lemonade and The Life of Pablo respectively. Frank Ocean finally released Blonde, his follow-up album to Channel Orange and Chance the Rapper changed the whole music industry landscape with Colouring Book. And to round up the whole year we got a pretty awesome Star Wars movie in Rogue One, the first Star Wars movie that wasn’t part of the main saga.

A lot has happened. And if you’re trying to remember every key event that’s transpired this year, you’ll probably miss out on a few things. So here’s our 2016 roundup – featuring some of our favourite, key events that we think you all should take note of.

1. Leo wins his first Oscar (February)

After four snubs (1 for Best Supporting Actor and 3 for Best Actor), that included nominations for top-notch performances in movies like The Aviator and Wolf of Wall Street, Leo finally clinched his well-deserved Academy Award for Best Actor for The Ravenant.

2. Deadpool arrived and it was awesome (February)

Even if you don’t regularly watch the beautiful game, you must have heard of underdog football club, Leicester City winning English Premier League. After only being promoted two seasons ago, with players that weren’t even playing professional football until a few years ago, Leicester City has become one of only six football clubs to become champions of England, joining the ranks of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers.

4. Our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man returned to Marvel! (May)

After a deal between Sony and Marvel, we finally get our first glimpse of Marvel Studios’ rendition of Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. This will be our third Spider-Man in 14 years but we’re all optimistic about this one because what makes this particular interpretation different is that the character is now back in the hands of Marvel.

Spider-Man is a crucial character in the Marvel universe and also, in the world of the Avengers; the cinematic universe would never have been complete without him. We also got a trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, his upcoming solo movie just a few weeks ago. From the trailer, it seems that we’ll be getting a movie that looks to be set predominantly in high school – something we haven’t seen from the past few attempts. We also won’t be getting the origin story again so if there’s one thing we can be sure of is that this Spider-Man sets to be a very different one.

5. Portugal wins EURO 2016 (July)

Christiano Ronaldo and Portugal won their first-ever major international trophy this July by becoming champions of Europe in the 2016 European Championship – EURO 2016 for short. With an extra-time goal from Eder, Portugal lifted the trophy, beating out hosts and favourites France.

6. We were introduced to the (short-lived) wonderful world of Pokemon GO (July)

What else is there to say? We can now catch, trade and battle pokemons in real life. It’s everything we’ve wanted since we started watching the cartoons and since we started playing the games on our Gameboy’s. Pokemon GO definitely changed the face of iPhone gaming for everyone.

7. Stranger Things became our new favourite TV show to binge-watch (July)

Netflix did it again by giving us one of the best new TV shows this year with Stranger Things. With it’s nod to the 80s and early Spielberg and Carpenter, the TV show brought us an irresistible suspense that kept us all binge-watching until the very end. What’s more, the series also brought us an incredibly talented, young cast that carried the whole show. This will surely become a cult classic.

8. Joseph Schooling brings home our first Olympic gold medal (August)

Joseph Schooling finally won us our very first gold medal in this year’s Olympics for the men’s 100m butterfly race. His timing of 50.39 seconds is an all-new record, beating out Michael Phelps’ old record of 50.58 seconds. #sgpride all the way!

9. Nathan Hartono comes in second place in Sing! China (October)

Local heartthrob Nathan Hartono came in second place in the highly popular Sing! China reality TV singing competition. Representing Jay Chou’s team, Hartono beat out three other finalists to clinch first runner-up. He is the first Singaporean ever to enter the final of the show.

10. Conor McGregor made UFC history holding two titles simultaneously (November)

After beating Eddie Alvarez on November 12th, in Madison Square for UFC 205, Conor McGregor became the first person in UFC history to hold two titles in two different weight classes simultaneously. He first became the featherweight champion on December 12th last year at UFC 194 after knocking out Jose Aldo. By knocking out Alvarez in the second round, McGregor also became the lightweight champion.

11. We love Coldplay (November)

[caption id="attachment_2694" align="alignnone" width="344"] Coldplay Instagram[/caption]

If there’s one thing we know about the Coldplay fans here, it’s that they really, really want to see them live. Over 100,00 tickets were sold out for both of the band’s shows. After tickets for the original concert were sold out within 2 hours, Live Nation Lushington, announced a second show to be held, a day before. But these too were swept up by fans with more than 1,500 people queueing up outside the National Stadium after the announcement.

12. The return of Final Fantasy (November)

[caption id="attachment_2727" align="alignnone" width="470"] Final Fantasy XV[/caption]

Arguably one of the biggest game launches in 2016, Final Fantasy XV finally hit shelves after ten long years in development. The game was met with great reception, with both fans and critics enjoying it despite some shortcomings. According to game director Hajime Tabata, FFXV packs in over 100 hours of gameplay, leaving you ample time to escape reality in this fantasy world.

These Movies That Are Coming Out Next Year Will Make You Glad It’s Nearly 2017

Out with the old, in with the new. It’s nearly the New Year, which means we not only get a new Star Wars film, it’s the first time three Marvel Studios movies will be released in a year and we might even get our first decent DC movie between Wonder Woman and Justice League.

Here are some noteworthy films to look forward in 2017, ordered chronologically:

1) The LEGO Batman Movie (February)

Starting off the year is The LEGO Batman Movie, a spin-off from the very successful The LEGO Movie. Will Arnett reprises his role as the titular character with a more comical over-the-top portrayal of the Dark Knight. Michael Cera lends his voice to the character of Robin while Zach Galifianakis plays arch-villain The Joker.

Release: February 10, 2017

2) Logan (March)

Following the success of the R-rated Deadpool, fans will finally get to see a Wolverine film in similar fashion – more violence and less humour, of course. Logan is inspired by the Old Man Logan, a short series in the comics which features an older Wolverine whose healing factor is beginning to fail. Watching the trailer alone will show the departure in tone from previous X-Men and Wolverine movies. It’s also said to be Hugh Jackman’s final movie as our favourite claw-wielding mutant.

Release: March 2, 2017

3) Kong: Skull Island (March)

If you didn’t already know, Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. are building a Godzilla-Kong film universe, with a Godzilla vs. Kong movie slated for 2020. In line with that shared universe is a King Kong reboot to introduce the famed ape into the series, with an updated take on the classic tale. Kong: Skull Island stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson and Brie Larson.

Release: March 10, 2017

4) Power Rangers (March)

While the verdict is still out there on this, one thing’s for sure: it’s got my nostalgia senses tingling. Almost every 90s kid remembers watching Power Rangers to some degree as a child, and while this looks vastly different stylistically, it’s going on the list. It’s also expected to be the first film in a series of many, with Lionsgate CEO saying that “…we [the studio] could see doing five or six or seven.”

Release: March 24, 2017

5) The Fate of the Furious (April)

Looking past the obviously jarring movie title – we’re assuming ‘Fate’ was used to make #F8 make more sense, the highly successful franchise of street racers-turned-professional criminals is at its eight installment. As seen in the trailers, the antagonist comes in the form of Dom who turns his back on family. This leads the crew to team up with The Rock and a former nemesis played by Jason Statham to bring Dom down.

Release: April 14, 2017

6) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May)

Need we say more? The sequel to the highly successful Guardians of the Galaxy is hotly anticipated, especially after fans have come to love this band of obscure lesser known Marvel characters. The film will take us to new planets and introduce new characters including the father of Peter “Star-Lord” Quill. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista return as Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax, while Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel reprise their voice acting roles as Rocket Raccoon and Groot.

Release: May 5, 2017

7) Wonder Woman (June)

While Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad didn’t exactly win critics over, DC fans are hopeful that Wonder Woman will finally set the DC Extended Universe on course to rival Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gal Gadot’s updated take on the Amazonian warrior was a refreshing addition to the testosterone-filled BvS, and from what we can see from the trailer, this movie looks like a it’s going to be hit. Fingers crossed!

Release: June 2, 2017

8) Spider-Man: Homecoming (July)

While DC and Warner Bros. are still finding their footing, Marvel has been making hit after hit and has become a reliable bet in the box office in recent years. That’s the reason Sony, who owns the film rights to Spider-Man, finally relented and decided to share everyone’s favourite wall-crawler with his creator. This meant Marvel Studios got to make creative decisions on the upcoming Spider-Man film, while including appearances from other Marvel Cinematic Universe characters such as Tony Stark. Homecoming takes place over Peter Parker’s high school years, with director Jon Watts describing it as a John Hughes-y film within the MCU.

Release: July 7, 2017

9) War for the Planet of the Apes (July)

The Planet of the Apes movies are known for its really long titles – even the original series in the early 70s had them, but this time war is looming at it doesn’t look good for mankind. The upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes is the third installment of the franchise after Rise and Dawn, and as the title alludes, the apes and humans engage in a battle for to determine their fate on Earth.

Release: July 14, 2017

10) Thor: Ragnarok (November)

Given that the film only releases in November, there’s still trailer or poster we could use besides this video shot during the production of the film. Thor: Ragnarok will be the third Marvel Studios movie after GotG 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming, and is primarily set in Asgard. The movie is said to be a bridge towards Infinity War, the third Avengers movie, and also introduce the final infinity stone – the soul gem. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston return as Thor and Loki while Mark Ruffalo makes an appearance as Hulk in the film.

Release: November 3, 2017

11) Star Wars Episode VIII

The best news to come from Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm was that we’ll be getting a new Star Wars film every year from 2015 to 2021. While the main ‘episodes’ will be released every two years, standalone stories will fill the gaps, starting off with the very well-received Rogue One. In 2017, we’ll be getting Episode VIII, which continues the adventures of Rey, Finn, Poe and BB-8 continuing right from the end of The Force Awakens.

Release: December 16, 2017

9 Best Moments From The New Spider-Man: Homecoming Trailer

The day has arrived when we finally get to watch the trailer for the eagerly-anticipated Spider-Man: Homecoming film.

Ever since word broke out that Sony and Marvel Studios will be working together to bring Spidey to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have been dying to see some footage from the film.

Here are the best moments from the debut trailer.

1) Peter Being A Typical High School Kid

Unlike previous iterations of the Spider-Man films, this movie – and its sequels – will be set during Peter’s high school years. In the clip, we get to see Peter talking about what all high school guys talk about: girls.

2) WEB WINGS!

That’s right! Just like in the early editions of the comics, this Spider-Man will have web wings, and they seem to be pretty functional too. Squirrel glide!

3) That Spider-Man and Iron Man Flyby Shot

What a shot this is of Spidey and Iron Man swinging and flying through New York. I could watch this all day.

4) The Avengers Appear – Well sort of

Okay so Iron Man is the only Avenger that will be in the film, but early on we get a scene whereby bank robbers are dressed in Avenger masks. It’s fooling no one, especially not Spider-Man, who deals with them as expectedly.

5) Tony and Peter Just Hanging Out

It’s scenes like these that are equally as rewarding as those action sequences between the pair. Watching these two quick-witted ‘genuises’ just casually hanging out is a sight to behold. It’ll also be interesting to see how the dynamics between the two characters will work.

6) Our First Glimpse of Vulture

As many of you already know, Vulture will be the main villain in the movie and we finally get a good look at him. Played by Michael Keaton (who also played Batman), this version of Vulture will have mechanical wings and equipment.

7) That Suit

Some of the ladies might be interested to know that we do get a glimpse of Tom Holland’s pectorals in the trailer. For hardcore fans, the scene also gives us an insight into how the suit works, which seems to use a pressure mechanism to stay tight while being worn.

8) Peter Parker Hanging In The New Avengers Facility

We also get to see Peter with Tony and Happy Hogan at the New Avengers Facility – previously seen in Civil War and Ant-Man. Wonder what happens here – like does he get inducted into the team? We certainly hope so!

9) Spider-Man Saving The Day

Of course, it won’t be a Spider-Man movie if our friendly-neighbourhood web crawler wasn’t risking his life to save the day. The scene shows Spidey trying his hardest to keep a ferry from dismantling after an attack that we can only assume was conducted by Vulture’s goons.

The First Trailer of Spider-Man: Homecoming Is Here – Watch It Now

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Breathe easy, ladies and gentlemen, Spider-Man has finally come home where he belongs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sony Pictures and Marvel Entertainment have released the first trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming and boy does it deliver the goods.

Spidey fans have been on the edge of their seats awaiting the trailer ever since word got out that footage from the upcoming film was shown at the Comic Con Experience in Brazil a couple of days ago.

Take a look at the trailer below, which premiered on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

From the footage shown at CCXP 2016 and the teaser trailer last night, the most talked about element has been the reveal of Spider-Man’s web wings.

[caption id="attachment_2453" align="alignnone" width="1874"] Spider-Man with his web wings[/caption]

For those who aren’t aware, Spider-Man actually debuted with web wings in the comics and continued to have them during the earlier issues of The Amazing Spider-Man. The wings in the comics were not used for gliding however and were more of a flourish rather than a functional element to the costume.

[caption id="attachment_2452" align="alignnone" width="1756"] Early issues of Spider-Man with web wings[/caption]

The most refreshing part of the reboot is that the upcoming film will not be an origin film. That means we no longer have to relive the spider bite and Uncle Ben’s death for the third time in 14 years. Instead, we will most likely jump straight into Peter’s life post-Civil War.

The film is also solely set in high school, which we didn’t get much of in the previous films. At most, the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield films showed us a brief look at Peter getting bullied and how his transformation gave him a one-up on Flash Thompson.

[caption id="attachment_2488" align="alignnone" width="2048"] Image: Jimmy Kimmel Live![/caption]

Tom Holland also makes a great Peter Parker, as seen in Captain America: Civil War. While his scenes were short, they were easily some of the most memorable moments of the movie, delivering quick quips and witty phrases while holding his own in combat.

For those who missed Captain America: Civil War (please watch it) and are wondering where Andrew Garfield is, the simplest way to put it is that the film rights for Spider-Man is finally being “shared” with Marvel.

Sony Pictures still holds the rights, but ever since The Amazing Spider-Man 2 flopped both commercially and critically, the studio decided it’ll probably be a good idea to let Marvel take a stab at it. This means that the character will finally get to interact with Iron Man, Captain America and the lot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There’s A New Spider-Man Game and We’re Not Sure What To Make of It

New games have been rolling out this E3 2016 and Sony dropped an unexpected trailer for its Playstation-exclusive Spider-Man game.

While fans have been waiting for a decent Spidey film since Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2, we’ve long given up hope for a good Spider-Man game since the dawn of video games. We’ve seen a fair share of near-misses and poor movie tie-ins for many years in the past.

For years, Spidey games have been helmed by Activision, but it now appears that Sony has taken back those rights and are producing a PS4-only version (rightly so), with developer Insomniac Games, best known for Resistance and Ratchet & Clank. Insomniac confirmed that the upcoming game will not be based on the upcoming film Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Source

“Spider-Man is one of the most iconic and well-known characters in the world, and we’re thrilled to be given the responsibility to create a brand new, authentic Spider-Man story,” wrote Bryan Intizar, Creative Director of Insomniac Games on PlayStation Blog.

“This is a more seasoned Peter Parker who’s more masterful at fighting big crime in New York City,” Insomniac said. “At the same time, he’s struggling to balance his absurdly chaotic personal life and career.”

Source

After watching the trailer, I’m slightly unsure on how we feel about the game. Don’t get me wrong, the trailer is decent (or at least better than some of Spidey’s previous outings on the gaming front). Gameplay looks smooth, the graphics and visuals are rendered well but there’s a huge sense of expectation on this game, and I’m afraid at what high expectations can do.

Spider-Man is arguably Marvel’s most valuable property, sitting on par with DC’s Superman and Batman as  the world’s most ubiquitous and most iconic superheroes of all time. I personally regard Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man as the best two superhero movies of all time. There’s way too much riding on this game that anything short of 10/10 may make it seem lacklustre and disappointing.

And then there’s the look & feel. His costume alone looks like a mishmash of many different version of the character. We have Ben Reilly’s massive symbol at the front, his emotive eyes from the Civil War movie with the back drop of New York that is reminiscent of the Tobey Maguire movies and a cover logo similar to that of Andrew Garfield’s.

There are many ways that Spider-Man games have gone wrong, from clunky and unresponsive controls to lack of depth and shallow story-lines but I’m ready to give Sony and Insomniac Games the benefit of the doubt.
